Rugby League World Cup fever was felt in Hobsons Bay on Monday, with fans taking to the streets of Altona to celebrate Tonga’s 28-22 victory over New Zealand on Saturday.
The scheduled party was delayed until Monday as the group carefully considered the impact to the community, especially those wanting to attend church services on Sunday.
Celebrations in Altona continued into Monday night, with Hobsons Bay Police showing a sign of force on the streets, a prominent presence to ensure that revellers were kept well under control.
The World Cup game, which saw Tonga defeat New Zealand, is a historic moment for the team that has never won against New Zealand previously. They came close in 1995, but not close enough.
