Local stows silver at Australian Cross Country Championships 2018

Hobsons Bay locals were among 1200 athletes and 3000 people who descended on the picturesque Maleny Golf Club on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland for the Australian Cross Country Championships 2018.

The day was swamped with 28 races from all different age groups with competitors from across Australia tackling a course that provided a real cross country challenge for the thousands of competitors.

The junior events ranged down to 10 years in the cross country and under-12 in the race walks. The juniors provided high quality competition with some events attracted fields of 100 competitors.

Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club and Williamstown Athletics Club member Lucinda Rourke took home second place in the girls four-kilometre run. It is the third silver medal in a row for 14-year-old who also received a silver in the team category for Victoria.

Also running in the under 18s age category was Monique Goldsworthy from Newport. The 14-year-old placed 8th in the girls four-kilometre run. Matthew Hussey, 17, from Altona placed 59th in the boys six-kilometre run.

Running in the under 14s age category was Freya Harris from Newport. The 10-year-old placed 19th in the girls two-thousand metre run. Lachlan Hicks, 10, from Seaholme placed 13th in the boys two-thousand metre run.
