Neighbour nabs rooftop spa as Altona crane crashes into carport

A 16-tonne crane attempting to deliver a spa has crashed into a carport at a home in Altona.

Altona residents who ordered a spa got more than they bargained for this afternoon when the spa was delivered onto their neighbour’s roof, along with an accompanying crane which toppled and landed on a carport.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade responded to a report of a crane falling over with a possible person trapped inside. On scene within minute’s firefighters found that the crane driver had been safely removed.

Commander Williams believes the male in his 50’s was fortunate to escape serious injury when the crane he was operating toppled over whilst locating a spa. Weighing 16 tonnes the crane caused minor damage to a neighbouring house as it fell into a backyard.

WorkSafe Victoria are on scene investigating the incident. Ambulance Victoria paramedics also attended, and Victoria Police remain on scene. The crane driver escaped unhurt and the incident caused minor damage.

Plans to safely remove the crane utilising other cranes will be undertaken this afternoon when the MFB will re-attend to standby and assist where necessary. Finley Road is expected to be closed for several hours.
