MFB investigators probe properties after fire rips through Altona homes

More than 35 firefighters from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) were called to a fire which engulfed two single-storey weatherboard homes on Railway Street North in Altona on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the scene just before 3pm to find the front two bedrooms of one home fully involved. The roof of the first property collapsed and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked quickly to contain the fire.

Due to the intensity of the flames and the hot and windy conditions, the blaze spread to a neighbouring property, which quickly became involved in flames. At the peak of the blaze, there were ten firefighting appliances on scene, and one Commander unit.

All occupants from the two homes were accounted for, including a man and a child who reside at the second home. It is understood MFB’s specialist fire investigators are investigating the cause of the incident.
