Fishy fisherman-kayaker caught in Williamstown with sizeable snapper

Victorian Fisheries Authority officers responded to a call from a member of the public who phoned the 13 FISH hotline after suspecting they had witnessed illegal fishing activity in Williamstown.

The caller reported observing a man fishing from his kayak who became increasingly suspicious after leaving the water and making multiple visits to a parked vehicle to conceal his catch collection.

When officers arrived on the scene, they intercepted the man at his vehicle and found one undersize bream and 27 snapper, 4 which were 40cm or over. The bag limit for snapper is 10, with only 3 allowed to be 40cm or more.

After seizing the kayaker’s concealed catch Victorian Fisheries Authority officers issued the man with two infringement notices totalling $968 for possessing undersize bream and exceeding the snapper catch limit.
