Provocative pirates bring adults only show to Yarraville

Traditionally known as family friendly, BK Opera is turning Gilbert and Sullivan on its head and dragging it back to its low-burlesque roots.

Full of burlesque and boylesque elements, BK Opera presents Adults Only Pirates of Penzance!

Presented over three nights as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, this promises to be night of bawdy and naughty fun.

Following on from their award-winning 2017 season, BK Opera, “wanted to present something a little more light hearted,” says Director, Kate Millett.

“And we are so excited to present this well-known classic in such a new way! We all grew up listening to Gilbert and Sullivan, and we wanted to show how it can be presented to emphasise their low-burlesque origins. This show is already filled with double-entendres. We’re just highlighting them!”

Conductor, James Penn continues, “This show presents unique challenges since its so well known and we definitely wanted to show off the rich operatic side of this operetta.”

Along for the ride are some of Melbourne’s finest emerging opera singers, including a few who have sung with the great Opera Australia. This will be a treat for the ears (and the eyes!).

Making her debut with BK Opera as the heroine of the story is acclaimed soprano Belinda Dalton. This fierce little vixen spent 2016 singing up a storm with Opera Australia, touring around the countryside.

Singing alongside her is Melbourne’s own Stephen Carolane, who has made a name for himself with his stunning lyrical tones and rippin’ bod!

Completing the cast is a group of singers drawn from Cabaret, Musical Theatre and Opera, each with their own story and wicked sense of humour.
